One Cold Evening

The clock struck six as I left office and started to walk towards the bus stop. It was one hectic day at the office, my shoulders were stiff with tension, and my face was tired from all the frowns, I gave in my appraisal meeting. All I got was a 20% raise, only 20%. The day couldn't get any worse for me.

The monsoon had arrived and the atmosphere, the surroundings where all damp. Dark grey clouds had taken over the clear blue sky, the sun seemed to have called it a day and dived into the horizon. There was a slow but a very cold breeze and a light drizzle in the air. As I walked, I zipped up my jacket and hoped it would not rain till I reached home. My legs were getting a bit stiff due to the chill in the air. I tried to walk fast as the clouds rumbled with fury and warned us of the heavy rain that was going to hit us.

I was about to cross the road, when a young boy who looked not a day older than six, ill fed, wearing partly torn clothes, humming Mungaru Male (popular kannada song), ran past me. As he passed he hit my leg with his swinging hand, and fell on my back with his hands touching the back of my thigh, but within a second he was up. I stopped to look at the kid, who now was a few yards away from me. He stopped running and stood there looking at me, with his big jet black eyes and an innocent big smile on his face. Which gave way to shouts of "Am sorry Anna (Brother) am sorry anna". I smiled back at him, and stood there watching him, run away singing the song loudly.

As I crossed the road, my brain kept going back to that kid. How happy he was, even though he wore clothes, which barely covered his frail body, he danced and ran around in the cold, singing and smiling, and I shivered and frowned with the jacket on. My thoughts were abruptly stopped by heavy rains which started to lash on me. I ran to take shelter in an old abandoned bus stop.

I wiped my face with a kerchief and, looked around to see one old man standing with me in the bus stop. The rain started to get stronger and stronger with each passing second. The street lights were on, which gave rise to an yellow glow in the air; cars zipped past splashing water on either side of the road.

I stood there looking at the cars; the dog trying to hid below a stone park bench. Just then I felt a tap on my shoulder, it was the old man, he looked to be in his late 50s, He had a black jacket on, and held what looked like a walkie talkie. His skin had wrinkles, his eyes were small, but didn't look tired, his hair partly grey and partly black, wearing brown leather shoes he looked like a police constable.

He smiled at me "Do you happened to have a lit" he asked holding a cigarette.

A fellow smoker, you never say no to a fellow smoker when asked for a lit.

I pulled out a fancy liter, out of my pocket and handed it to him.

Holding up the cigarette he asked "I only have one cigarette, do you want to share this with me?"

"No, I think I have one in my pocket" I replied and reached into my pocket and took out a cigarette pack. Luckily I still had one left in the pack.

We lit our cigarettes' and blew out a cloud of smoke and looked straight at the road.

I broke the silence "So you are in the police force?"

"What gave you the idea that am a police guy? The shoes?" he asked blowing out smoke from his mouth.

I smiled and nodded
He continued "Yes, I work for the police force, I have been posted here to keep a check on muggers and pick pocketers"

I replied a faint yes and nodded my head as he continued

"We are living in a cruel world, you will not believe small kids are employed as pick pocketers, and they are the most skilled ones."

I laughed and replied "It would be a shame to get robbed by a young kid"

"Believe me they are the best, you wouldn't even know if one of them robbed you" he replied tapping the cigarette ash

I gave a dry smile and took a long puff of my cigarette.
We stood silent for few minutes smoking the last bit of the cigarette. The policeman's words kept ringing in my ear. I mechanically put my hand on my back pocket.

My face first went expression less when I found it empty. After a minute I couldn't help but smile, the cute young kid had robbed me clean.

The smile stayed on, as the policeman and me waved good bye and parted ways. The heavy rain had now turned into light drizzle. I started to walk towards the main bus stop. I looked around as I walked to see if the kid was still hanging around. The incident kept playing in the mind. My mind was flooded with images of the kid standing and smiling. I felt stupid, but I couldn't help but smile. A couple of hours ago, I couldn't help but frown when my boss gave me a 20% raise and now I smiled when I was robbed clean by a small kid.

I took off my jacket and stood for a minute with my arms wide open, the cold wind entered my shirt and gave me gentle hug. It seemed to comfort me, to play with me. The day couldn't get any better for me.

Great Men Died Fighting, Let me tell you a story.

I am somebody

The clock struck 10 pm I decided to sleep, when I was about to get into the bed my cell phone rang, it was my best friend Pavan, we spoke for almost half an hour, started from football and ended with his preparations to go to UK for higher studies.

10:45 I was still rolling in my bed not able to sleep, I decided to go down and watch TV for sometime.

News Channel
Bomb explosion in Iraq, killings in Kashmir, Ghajini creates all kinds of records at the box office, IPL Dhamaka, will India win the fifth ODI?

Entertainment News Channel
Ghajini movie of the year, Slumdog nominated to Oscars, Priety heats up the IPL meet, shooting stalled coz of killings in Mumbai. Will Akshay retain his No1 position in Bollywood?

Movie Channels
I love you, I will kill you, I can’t live without you, hahaha, Maa, Will you marry me?

Entertainment Channel
Hahahaha, hehehehe, Sa Re Ga Ma, Bahu Nahi, Friends, Is This your final Answer?

I am nobody

My head was spinning there was so much happening in this world, TV just gave me a feel of how much important each and everyone is.
Killings everywhere, people are passionate about their country, their religion, their region within the country. We are all together; we are all fighting for a cause. Great Men died fighting for such cause, spent their and are spending their lives for such cause.

The arms of the clock had come together to welcome a new day. I went up to my terrace for some fresh air. As I sat on the parchment of the terrace I turned to my left to see the bustling market fast asleep, moon light danced with the street lights on the empty road. I looked down to see a clear shadow of mine; it was a full moon night. I mechanically looked up to witness the most amazing spectacle I had ever seen, a jet black canvas filled with silver sparkling dots and among them was a radiating white full circle. The stars and the moon seemed to be a part of a symphony, the sparkling stars seemed to dance on the horizon, and the moon looked beautiful, with each passing minute it seemed to innocently smile at me, a smile so innocent so full of shyness that it melts the most brutal hearts.

The whole universe lay above me, stars bigger in size than the Earth, millions in number; they could least care if the Earth was burning its self in the pursuit of the most materialistic things, if Ghajini boomed at the box office, if Akshay was No 10, if India lost the ODI, if I was a Hindu, Muslim or Christian. Who am I? I am nobody. So much out there we have no clue about, yet we shout. What is special about planet Earth? Why were we placed here? Do we all fall into a perfect picture?
I think there are a lot of people with me but are there truly lots of people with me, they are all around me, but we walk alone on the paths we choose. If we are alone, why are there groups of everything, why the borders, why the hatred? We come we go. Do we really live?
The Earth is like the universe and we are all like the stars, but never have we sparkled, nor have we danced. We have tortured, invented machines to torture, and killed each other.

My thoughts were interrupted by a white dot darting across the black canvas; the falling star dived into the horizon. I wish one day I fall that gracefully and pass onto the next world.

I slipped into the cozy blanket, closed my eyes; the river of my thoughts had reached the calm ocean. There was still one ripple in the ocean. “Great men died Fighting for a Cause”. Great?

The Bus

I was on my way to my friend's place on my bike, I was riding at around 60 kms speed when from a cross road suddenly came a car, I narrowly missed banging into the car, the car was on the wrong lane, the driver did not honk nor had he given any kind of signal, before entering the main road. I turned back to look at the car, as I turned back, I saw the diver and his friend putting their hands out and shouting abuses at me. I stopped to turn around and give the driver a piece of my mind, he was the one who was on the wrong side, and he was the one who didn't honk. I was angry and wanted to punch him right on his nose, but before I could turn around he had already got into another cross road and was out my sight. My whole day was spoilt; my mood was crappy, to say the least. It took me a couple of days to forget the incident.

My first day at the office, I had decided to take the bus to the office. There were a lot of people waiting for the bus, it was the rush hour. The bus which stopped was already full, but somehow all of us waiting managed to squeeze into the bus. Suddenly there were a few loud voices near the door, I turned back to see a couple of middle aged office goers angry as the bus had stopped 10 mts away from the bus stop, the abuses were directed at both the conductor and the driver, I was surprised to see someone that angry for such a simple thing. My thoughts were abruptly stopped by someone patting on my hand and shouting ticket ticket. I turned and looked at him, he looked to be in his late 30s, his hair was uncombed, he was sweaty, looked like someone who didn't know what taking bath meant. He was the bus Conductor. The sight of the conductor made the voices grow louder; it looked like they were waiting for him. The fight lasted 10 full mins, abuses were flying left and right a few more people joined the angry men and became an angry group, a few spoke on the conductors behalf, and a few consoled both the groups. It was very silly, the conductor just got more frustrated and tired not to mention, the angry men cooled down but they were still frowning.
I was finding it hard to hold onto to the handle, the bus was packed with people. The silence in the bus was killed by a low agitated voice which started to get louder and stronger by each passing second, the problem the voices had was that the bus was too slow, abuses started finding their way to the driver; the voices felt the driver was purposely driving the bus slow. This I felt was the most absurd thing I had ever heard; why will the driver go slow, if he can go fast? He has been sitting on a piece of wood covered with cloth for God knows how long, his ass might be killing him, and he is surely not enjoying the heat coming from the hot engine beside him.
A couple of agitated voices targeted the conductor. They were angry coz the conductor stopped the bus in all the stops. I didn't understand this, just some time back the people got angry coz the bus stopped 10 mts away from the stop, now they are angry coz the bus is making all the stops.
It was stupid; I couldn't wait to get off the bus. Finally my stop came, the voices were still there, but the problems and the demands kept changing. The conductor and the driver had faced the angry men and the agitated group.
In addition to the people the driver had some more problems, the engine was not in good condition; the gear leaver was not working smoothly. The conductor had a hard time coming up with change every time there was hundred rupee note, then he had a piece of paper which he filled after every stop and had to make sure everyone had a ticket or a bus pass.

There was a good 1km left to reach my office, I decided to walk. As I walked I couldn’t help but think about the conductor and the driver, how can some one take that so much of pains every day and still go on with their work, saying nothing. What could they be thinking? Do they spend every minute of their life cursing, why they took up this job?
I spent two full days in bad mood coz someone for a few seconds said something and sped away; I wanted to punch that guy may be even break his hand.

I have now stopped taking the bus to the office, but every now and then I do take the bus, and every time I see the conductor I smile and think if it the first smile he’s seen in months or years.
